Making Development Assistance Sustainable Through Islamic Microfinance

This paper explores how microfinance can be provided on a shari‘a -compliant basis and what instruments and structures could be used. The paper explores whether Islamic microfinance would be best provided by specialist shari‘a -compliant financial institutions or by existing Islamic and conventional banks, and also whether credit unions organized through co-operatives are preferable to commercial institutions (such as banks or investment companies).

The Islamic Finance Project and Islamic Legal Studies Program of Harvard Law School organized a panel discussion in Pound Hall on September 26, 2011 entitled “Islamic Finance: Bankruptcy, Financial Distress and Debt Restructuring”. The goal of the seminar was to create an understanding of recently reported cases of bankruptcy and debt restructuring of Islamic finance products.
