Abstract
This paper explores how microfinance can be provided on a shari‘a -compliant basis and what instruments and structures could be used. The paper explores whether Islamic microfinance would be best provided by specialist shari‘a -compliant financial institutions or by existing Islamic and conventional banks, and also whether credit unions organized through co-operatives are preferable to commercial institutions (such as banks or investment companies).
