Zakah Investment and its Role in Poverty Alleviation in Contemporary Muslim Countries

This study focused on the entrepreneurial characteristics of the marginal poor of Bangladesh. From the target group, 21 families have been taken as samples and three potential inputs have been supplied to the sample families in order to carry the study. The inputs were small business capital, indigenous technology, and training to build up moral capacity. Over five years, the impact of inputs on the growth of the economy of the marginal poor was observed. This paper argues that only business capital cannot create a sustainable environment.

The Effects of Competition on the Outreach Level of Pawnshop Industry in Malaysia

The aim of this paper is to shed new light on the as yet unsolved question of whether competition is a good or bad model for microfinance markets. We empirically analyzed how the degree of competition affects the achievements of development projects promoting micro-credit. These projects usually provide subsidies to Microfinance institutions (MFIs) for capacity and institution building with a dual objective: The MFIs should be enabled to extend its loan supply for MSE (outreach to the target group) while at the same time aiming at cost coverage and profitability (financial sustainability).

The Challenge in Poverty Alleviation: Role of Islamic Microfinance and Social Capital

Islamic microfinance is an intervention-based social intermediation in which poor people can mobilize their savings, which are linked with Islamic investment, and ideally become self-employed. It results in building social capital. The present study attempts to understand the growth of Islamic microfinance and how the Islamic microfinance sector and social capital can contribute to the challenge of poverty alleviation.

Sustainability of BMT Financing for Developing Micro-enterprises

The aim of this study is to analyze the sustainability of Islamic microfinancing for developing micro-enterprises (MEs). We use the example of Baitul Mal Wat Tamwil (BMT), an Islamic microfinance institution in Indonesia. Two approaches will be used to explore sustainability: data envelopment analysis (DEA) and level of outreach. Firstly, the results indicate, generally, that the efficiency of BMTs is relatively low.
