Dr. Joseph Lumbard is Associate Professor of Quranic Studies at CIS. He has previously taught at the American University of Sharjah, Brandeis University, and the American University in Cairo. He also served as Advisor for Interfaith Affairs to the Jordanian Royal Court.
Dr Alexandre Caeiro is Associate Professor at CIS – HBKU since 2012. He has been in research at various Universities at Germany, France and the Netherlands. He received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies (2011) from Utrecht University, MA (2002) from School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, Paris, and BA (2001) from Trinity College, Dublin. His research broadly deals with the transformations of Islamic law in modern contexts.
Frank is an Associate Professor at College of Islamic Studies, HBKU. Before joining CIS, he was Assistant Professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Bern (2010-2015) where he received his Habilitation in Islamic Studies. He received his Ph.D. from University of France in 2002. He has studied modern history, Islamic studies and Arabic in Hamburg, University of France and Damascus. His Research interest lies in History of the Modern Middle East, Secularism, Political Religion and Islamophobia.
Dr. Muhammad Modassir Ali earned his Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies and his Master’s and PhD in Comparative Religion from the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). He was selected twice for the Fulbright Scholar Program; in 2003 at the University of Santa Barbara and in 2008 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Having worked at his alma mater, IIUI, for some years where he taught courses on world religions, particularly Christianity and Indian religions, he moved to Qatar University in 2011, where he was Associate Dean for Student Affairs until 2014.
التواصُلُ بين أبناءِ الثقافةِ الواحِدة عَبر قُرونٍ وعُهودٍ يَتَأتّى بِدِراسةِ الكلمةِ المُدَوَّنة، ويؤتي ثِمارَه بالاستفادةِ مِمّا سَجّله عُلماءُ هذه الثقافةِ أو تلك عن مَظاهِر الحَياةِ المُتنوّعة آنذاك، ليعرف أبناءُ المراحل التالية تفاصيل اجتماعيّة ودينيّة واقتصاديّة وسياسيّة وعِلميّة يبنون عليها مَعرفتهم ويُتابعون مِن خلالها أعمالهم، ويستمرّون في شَقِّ طريقِ المعرفة الواسِع. فالحضاراتُ تُبنَى بتدوين مَعرفة كلِّ عهدٍ وثقافته وفُنونه، وتُراث الأُممِ يُحدّد مَكانَتَها وأسبقيّتها ومدَى تألّق أعلامها في زمانها.
يرصد البحث تصوّر أحمد صدقي الدجاني (1936-2003) للهويّة العربيّة في فلسطين، وتعريفها اللغوي باعتبار تصوّره واحدًا مِن تصوّرات الهويّات المحوريّة خلال القرن العشرين. فمِن خلال إجراء مسح لِحزمةٍ مِن المُصطلحات التي تناولها الدجاني في كتاباته، نستكشف ملامح بنية هذا التصوّر الهويّاتي وعلاقة لَبِناتهِ ببعضها وصيغة التعبير اللغوي عنه.
يُمثّل كتاب "مصارع العُشّاق" حلقةً في سلسلةِ حلقاتِ الكتاباتِ عن الحُبِّ في الحضارةِ العربية الإسلامية. فقد جاء تأليفُ جعفر السراج لكتابه هذا بعد أن عرفت المكتبة العربية حوالي أربعة عشر كتاباً ورسالة في الموضوع قبله. كما جرى تأليف عدد مِن الكتب في الموضوع بعده تأثّر أغلبها به تأثراً كبيراً. ذلك أن هذه الحلقة تميزت بقوة إشعاعها. يبقى لكتاب مصارع العشاق، في موضوعه، بين جميع كتب الحب والأحباب التي ظهرت قبله وبعده، مذاق خاص يستطيبه قارئ الكتاب في أي عصر كان. ومرد ذلك إلى ما كشفت عنه هذه الأضواء مما تميز به هذا الكتاب هدفاً وأسلوباً.

This book presents a study of the cult of saints among Muslims and Jews in medieval Syria and the Near East. Through case studies of saints and their devotees, discussion of the architecture of monuments, examination of devotional objects, and analysis of ideas of ‘holiness’, the book depicts the practices of living religion and explores the common heritage of all three monotheistic faiths.
The relationship between the workings of memory and the formation of culture is intriguingly close in the world of medieval
