Abstract

This book studies the Bait al-Maal institution in early Islam and the role of the state in the economy. It is divides into three parts. Part one contains chapters concerning the essentials of the Islamic economic system, the moral foundation of economic life, and land and ownership controls. Part two addresses the Bait al-Maal. It contains chapters on its concept and early history, on Ghanima and Khums, on Zakat, on Jizya and Kharaj, on miscellaneous incomes, on the center-province relationship, and on the economic policy of the Islamic state. There is a section on coinage. Part three is on economic indicators, i.e., prices and the cost of living, salaries, affluence and the standard of living, and population. This book also has an appendix containing weights and measures, a bibliography, and two indexes. One index is general, and one is for persons and places.
