The work is drawn from the book ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVES: STUDIES IN HONOUR OF SAYYID ABUL A'LA MAWDUDI, a collaborative work edited by Khurshid Ahmad and Zafar Ishaq Ansari. Chapra's booklet presents fundamental principles of Islam and delineates the role, the duties, and the strategy of an Islamic state in addressing the material requirements of the society it governs. An underlying principle is that life is to be led in a holistic and intergrated manner. The foreword is contributed by Khurram J. Murad.
