The Appeal of Religious Law: Jurisdictional Politics and Modern State Formation in Twentieth-Century Qatar

Dr. Alex Caeiro will describe the modern legal trajectory of Qatar. The seminar will highlight the competition between the civil and shar'i judiciaries over legal authority. It will seek to explain the appeal of sharia courts for Qatar's modernizing society during the second half of the twentieth century.

 

CILE Winter School 2023

The 2023 CILE Winter School will be hosted in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), focusing on topics related to armed conflict ethics. Not only is this topic important as it brings forth discussions on maintaining ethics in violent and difficult situations, but it is also an issue that is relevant to the current position of Muslims in the context of the Global War on Terror (GWOT).

يتمحور النقاش في الصفحات التالية حول العلاقة بين الحياة الدينية والحياة السياسية، وتداعيات هذه العلاقة على الحياة العامة والعيش المشترك لمواطنين يختلفون في معتقداتهم وتفسيراتهم الدينية. ولّدت التجارب التاريخية التي تعاملت مع هذه العلاقة موقفين أساسيين مختلفين وجوابين متناقضين حول ارتباط الدين بالسياسة وبمؤسسات الدولة التي تسعى لتنظيم المجتمع، تمثَّل الأول في الدولة الدينية التي تتداخل فيها الحياة الدينية والسياسية، والآخر في الدولة العلمانية التي تسعى لحصر القضايا المرتبطة بالتعاليم الدينية في مؤسسة مستقلة عن مؤسسات الدولة هي المؤسسة الدينية.
