Since beginning operations 10 years ago, the Kuwait Finance House, the only Islamic bank in Kuwait, has been one of the more profitable Islamic banks. Kuwait has prospered due to high oil revenues during the last several decades, contributing greatly to the wealth of many Kuwaitis. This study examines the principles of Islamic finance in comparison to those of the Western capitalist system. This thesis first explores the financial environment in Kuwait, then reviews the activities and evaluates the success of the Kuwait Finance House.

Within the last two decades new types of financial intermediaries have emerged, including interest free Islamic financial institutions (IFIs). Economists, bankers, jurists of Islamic Jurisprudence and other academics have directed much of there focus towards providing descriptive analyses of how these systems operate, a theoretical framework derived from modern economic analysis methods, and empirical experimental evaluations.

This study examines the foundation and principles of Islamic banking, then provides an in-depth study of the Jordan Islamic Bank (J.I.B.), which operates and competes in a non-Islamic system. Despite difficulties which arise from the J.I.B.'s operational environment, the overall efficiency of the bank has improved during the last five years (the bank's ability to allocate the available financial resources increased from 65% in 1983 to 73.8% in 1987). The bank's performance has followed a similar trend (the earning assets to total assets ratio increased from 57.4% in 1983 to 63.2% in 1987).

This thesis examines how Islamic banks implement marketing concepts, their attitudes towards marketing principles, and how Islamic banks compare with Western banks in these regards. This study finds that Western banks are more apt to employ more deeply developed marketing strategies than Islamic banks. Islamic institutions tended to focus their marketing schemes on highlighting the social responsibility principles to which they adhere, a strategy less often utilized by western banks.
