Akarli studied economics at Robert College (BA '68), southeast European history at University of Wisconsin (MA '72), and Middle East history at Princeton (MA '73, Ph.D. '76). He taught at Bosphorus University in Istanbul (1976-83), Yarmouk University in Jordan (1983-89), and Washington University in St. Louis (1989-96) before joining Brown. He held research fellowships at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (1985-86), at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2003-04), and at the Islamic Legal Studies Program of Harvard Law School (2005-06).

Omar Akalay, a renowned economist and banker, may have been wandering his imagination between a credit report and a cash flow situation. Returns to the oriental tales that were to enchant his childhood, inspired him a book of economy. Through the adventures of Sindbad the Sailor, Aladdin, and the Arabian Nights, he finds commercial mechanisms that were thought to be modern and European, and early economic thought.

Akacem, Mohammed

Professor Akacem received a BA (UK) in Economics in 1976 and an MA and a PhD in Economics from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1981. Dr. Akacem worked on world oil market issues at ICEED in Boulder, Colorado. He worked at The Saudi Fund for Development in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Akacem joined Metro State University of Denver 1991. He teaches courses on Money and Banking, Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa, Geopolitics and Economics of oil among others. Ainley, Michael

Michael Ainley is a Senior Adviser to Andrew Bailey, Head of the Prudential Business Unit at the FSA. Since mid2010, he has been a member of the FSA Senior Leadership Team managing the transition to a Twin Peaks system of regulation; he has headed the Department supervising RBS and Barclays; and is currently running the Department that is implementing the European Insurance Directive, Solvency II.
