This book is a study of the theoretical basis of Islamic banking and a review of the performance of Islamic banks in Egypt in the 1980s. Islamic banks may not engage in activities that are forbidden by the Shari'ah (Islamic law), including interest bearing transactions (Riba), speculation (Gharar), and financing activities prohibited by Islam (e.g., production of toxicants)._x000D_ _x000D_
