Abstract
This working paper examines the development and evolution of the field of Islamic economics. The author claims that Islamic economists attempt to ensure economic justice through an idealistic dream for society, and that Islamic doctrines leave more room for interpretation than economists are willing to admit. The paper also challenges the view that unity among Islamic economists is achieved through Islam itself and its ability to produce consensus.
