Abstract

Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) provides help to member countries, on their request, in any matter relating to the application of Shari’ah in their economies. It was in this context that IRTI responded positively when it received a request from the Government of Indonesia to organize a seminar on “Financial Institutions according to Shari’ah” for the officials of their Ministry of Finance, central and commercial banks, and other interested parties. These are the proceedings of the seminar that was held in Jakarta in September 1990. The seminar was timely in view of the fact that at that time Islamic banks were being established in Indonesia for the first time and the seminar served a useful purpose of educating the bankers in the private sectors as well as officials in the government with respect to the concept and operation of Islamic banks._x000D_ _x000D_ A selected group of scholars and practitioners in the field of Islamic banking made presentations foc
