The work is the author's doctoral dissertation. The author explains in the introduction that the importance of insurance has in modern times increased. Muslims, it is related, seek to advance themselves by Islamically permissible means. Thus, it follows that Muslims are concerned with the permissibility status of insurance in Islam. The author has found that insurance changed over the ages from a cooperative (and thus Islamic) practice to a speculative practice of capitalists. Modern insurance is seen to rest on probability. The book is comprised of three parts. The first is concerned with the idea of insurance and the forms that it has taken through the years. The second is dedicated to Islamic law, with particular attention given to the concept of Riba. The final chapter is concerned with examining modern insurance and seeing where it stands relative to the Shari'ah. A section within this chapter is devoted to mutual insurance.
