It is often said that Islam is the other of Europe and that European identity has been defined against Islam. In the contemporary context, alterity constructions of Islam are regularly held to be a central factor in the rejection of Muslims in the West more generally. Led by Dr. Frank Peter, Assoc. Professor of Islamic Studies and the author of the book "Islam and the Governing of Muslims in France: Secularism without Religion", this talk examines these claims about Islam as Europe's other by situating them in broader conversations about otherness and the history of Orientalism.
