Urbanism and the Cultural Value of a Qatari Neighborhood: An Empirical Study and Narrative Synthesis

The urbanization of the Qatari neighborhood (freej) is moving at a rapid rate in the modern times, that has wrought dramatic societal change due to social, economic and cultural forces. This thesis investigates the cultural value of the Qatari freej, and the impacts on the Qatari community. Scholars in the Arab world use historical literature as a way to showcase identity for regional urbanism. The study investigates this approach in relation to cultural value in comparison to the modern context. Therefore, the research proposes a framework suitable in today's society through first hand observational analysis.The methodology includes qualitative and quantitative analysis with feedback from the public as well as first-hand observation, to aid the analysis. This thesis uses concepts and a framework of investigation customized for cultural, architectural and social sustainability. Tracing the origin of the freej and the evolution of its components, allows for a deeper understanding of the freej and its dense settlement of individuals.This thesis concludes by creating a suitable framework based on social, cultural and communal values, therefore, the empirical evidence of this study concerns cultural value, social organization, and sustainability of urban life confirms the fruitfulness of the final framework exhibited.Consequently, this framework deserves serious consideration by urban planning authorities and land use regulatory/policy representatives.
