Abstract
Historically, the institution of Waqf has played a pivotal role in the social life of Muslims who organized their religious, educational and public welfare activities through this institution. It was due to this essential role of awqaf in Muslim society that the interference of the East India Company in waqf properties was one of the key factors behind the uprising of 1857, the so-called ‘Mutiny’ against the British rule in India. This paper will give an overview of waqf historical developments in Pakistan along with examining the Pakistan awqaf regulations state regulation and assessing the impact of such regulation on the provision of welfare services through awqaf.
