Abstract
From early centuries, waqf has been an inseparable part of the Islamic civilization, and has played a central role in Islamic Iranian society, economy, and politics from the very beginning. This chapter aims to present a holistic historical and contemporary analysis of the practices and the institution of waqf in Iran. The paper will be divided into four distinct sections on the historical roots of waqf in Iranian society, a snapshot of the current landscape, analysis of the management model and the latest innovative developments. Finally, the paper highlights some the main challenges facing the waqf institution in Iran, emphasizing the need for improved and more effective supervision and regulation of Awqaf and faster adoption of new technological and Fiqhi developments in this front.
