Abstract
The diverse and multi-layered land laws and systems globally are best appreciated in their socio-historical contexts as well as political and economic trajectories. Awqaf laws are mediated through religious, colonial, customary and statutory sources and practices that are referred to as legal pluralism. This paper outlines the distinctive features of awqaf laws and institutions and contemporary trends in their continuing dynamic evolution for welfare, empowerment, and prosperity. In particular, it considers the interplay between awqaf laws, administration, and governance towards improving efficiency and access to awqaf for all sections of society, including women and youth in the backdrop of human rights, peace, and development. The shift from a primary legal approach to innovative tools and pragmatic mechanisms that harness the potential of awqaf are assessed in a contemporary comparative framework.
