Abstract
The institution of Waqf has been extensively used by Muslims around the world for common good and is among the most important channels for human development as it deals with long-term collective welfare and progress of society. This paper looks exclusively at the successful cases of use of Awqaf in India, which is home to the third largest number of Muslims in the world (about 190 million), and the largest where Muslims are living as a minority. The paper focuses on the successful utilization of Waqf properties in India. It commences with a background of Waqf in theory and the variety of uses that have been envisaged. It then looks into certain depth on the successful utilization of Waqf in India, especially in the areas of Healthcare, Education, Orphanages, Social security and other socio-economic developmental causes. The paper then concludes with key takeaways highlighting the way forward for various parties involved in Awqaf development including the Government & Waqf Regulators, Mutawallis, Community organizations, and Private Enterprises. |
