This lecture will discuss the exciting life and career of the Mamluk Sultan al-Mu’ayyad Shaykh, who ruled over Egypt and Bilad al-Sham, in the early 15th century. He had an active role during the reigns of his predecessors before eventually taking over the throne.
Sultan al-Mu’ayyad Shaykh built a magnificent religious and funerary complex behind Bab Zuwayla, the south gate of Cairo. The lecture will discuss its architecture, decoration, and the unique inscriptions of its qibla wall.
