This thesis analyzes the theoretical and practical issues of Islamic banking within Iran, a system that operates entirely in conformity with Islamic principles. This study provides fundamental information about the theory and the actual practice of this system. Chapter one outlines the background, scope, objectives of the study, and the methodology employed. Chapter two considers the prohibition of riba (interest) in the shari`a, while chapter three poses questions with regards to money and interest in both Western and Islamic economies. Chapters four and five highlight alternative methods and structures of banking to resolve the problem of riba. Specific examples of banking in Iran are utilized to illustrate developments in Islamic banking.
