Abstract

This study examines the use of waqf for financing sustainable water use in the immediate vicinity of a mosque in Cape Town, South Africa. The greywater stemming from ablution is utilised for irrigation of crops. These crops are grown for the purpose of feeding the local community and the revenue generated from sales of the crops is used for aiding in the upkeep of the mosque. Examples related to waqf and shura use in the Middle East are outlined in order to better understand applications of these principles in a South African context. Technical, socio economic, as well as legislative issues related to South African and Islamic law are outlined. Furthermore future possibilities for research and commercial applications related to water use, specifically for this project, are outlined.
