Abstract

Several researchers in Islamic economics and finance subject have suggested that awqaf may contribute in alleviating poverty. In many countries, awqaf institutions are gaining attention not only from government but also from public sectors. Some of these institutions report that they have contributed not only in alleviating poverty in the countries, but also in achieving basic education, and providing basic health infrastructures. However, currently there is lack of studies which measure performance of those awqaf institutions. This qualitative study, therefore, is conducted to design some measurement indicators for assessing the performance of the awqaf institutions using criteria of input, output, outcome and efficiency. Moreover, to validate the indicators, this study assesses the performance of Tabung Wakaf Indonesia (TWI), an awqaf institution in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. The study finds that TWI showed a relatively good performance during 2010
