Abstract

Islamic societies are charged with enforcing the commandments of Allah as seen in al-Qur'an and the sunna . Western ideas of development have been based on income growth. This 'value-free' notion of development has come under much scrutiny in recent years as income inequality has persisted in much of the world, even in light of economic growth. Muslims must look for concepts of development that espouse the values of Islam. Development must be seen in broader terms. By seeking advice from the West, many Muslim countries are allowing flawed ideas of growth to hinder true societal development through the practice of Islam. In defining development, value judgements are inevitable; Muslims must assure that any Islamic concept of development stem from the precepts of al-Qur'an and the sunna.
