Toward organizing an Islamic political economy

Abstract

The author presents an argument that Islamic economics ought to be viewed by Muslim scholars, by Muslim governments, and by the academics of the world in general as a full and proper alternative to the economic ideology of the West that has been imported to the Islamic world. The Islamic economic system has its own identity regarding what it seeks to achieve, what its basic postulates and its ideological foundations are, and what means it tries to exercise in holding up its moral code and maintaining its morally-conscious activities. The author reports that Muslim countries should not try to imitate the West in their development strategies; rather they ought to turn their attention primarily to the concepts present in Islam's economic outlook. A change in approach can be the means of dealing effectively with the problems of the Muslim world and the problems of the entire international system.
