Abstract

This article examines the estimated income and savings rates for North American and European Muslims, as well as estimates on the amount of money contributed to charities and remittances to their country of origin. Muslim countries should reach a consensus with non-Muslim countries on a regulatory framework for ensuring that charities are functioning in a legitimate manner. The steps involved include creating clear definitions of how charities function and what constitutes terrorism versus political struggle, establishing an international regulatory regime for charities accompanied by a dispute mechanism, and requiring greater financial transparency.
