In its 1994 annual report, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) published a study on the economies of its member states between 1990 and 1993. The IDB recorded current account deficits and a lack of resource inflow in member countries. One problem that prevents greater development in IDB states is the cost associated with massive external debt. Other barriers to Muslim countries' development include patterns in unemployment and recently enhanced regional economic associations such as NAFTA. Among the goals of the IDB's Strategic Agenda are health and education, support for human resources, private sector development, industry, and strengthening unity among member states. It is expected that the IDB's strategies will eliminate some of the roadblocks facing IDB states on the path to greater economic development.
