The functional role of zakat in the Islamic social economy

Zaka has a function in an Islamic society. Islam itself is a total system. Thus it is thus distinct from both the capitalist and communist systems. To view zaka as a kind of tax is improper; zaka is not at all a tax, as the latter term is understood.
