Abstract

Qur'anic economics and orthodox economics may be integrated under the concept of utility maximization. Under a rational-choice principle of economics based on maximization, iman is the guiding principle of a rational Muslim. Both principles are Qur'anic principles that lie at the heart of the Master Plan of Creation (MPC), which depicts God's purpose in the creation of man and the universe and the elements necessary to achieve this divine purpose. Material to support this understanding of the MPC comes from the Qur'an. A sense of the MPC will lead to an understanding of both the field of economics and its purpose. This universal paradigm is unique because of the importance of the role it assigns to the moral individual. The economic system's final goal, human salvation, profoundly shapes its ideas, practices, and regulations.
