Abstract
Shari`a (Islamic law) is theoretically the inexorable expression of divine will, but it has rarely been treated as such in practice. Pakistan has from its inception debated the role of Islam in the legal system. Pakistan has attempted to 'Islamize' its legal system for the past nine years. The great disparity between theory and practice remains. Pakistan's future is uncertain and the gap between theory and practice probably will not narrow.
