Abstract
Having Lived in North America, Canada to be exact, I was able to see first-hand the challenges facing the Muslim community when it came to housing. With conventional mortgages being inaccessible for religious reasons, the Islamic alternatives are very limited, inefficient, and unfair. This research examines the perceived benefits of owning a home, establishes connections between those benefits and Maqasid, and finally trying to assess them in order of priority. The research also takes a closer look at the current means of financing a home, both conventional and Islamic, while trying to assess those means in terms of advantages and disadvantages of each. While it finds that both has disadvantages which makes them dysfunctional for Muslims, the research recommends further research into other means that are more equitable and fair. One area that is, in my opinion, a research worthy is crowdfunding, which has been successfully utilized to raise funds for other purposes. Perhaps with some modifications, it could be used for home ownership.
