(Partner, Amereller Legal Consultants, Berlin, Germany and Dubai, United Arab Emirates) Bälz is a partner at Amereller Legal Consultants, a boutique firm specializing in Middle Eastern Business law with offices in Dubai, Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad, as well as in Munich and Berlin. Previously a partner in the Frankfurt office of Gleiss Lutz, Bälz is one of the pioneers of Islamic finance in continental Europe and has worked on numerous shari‘a compliant transactions in Europe and the Middle East. In addition, he has advised governments, regulators and international organizations on the use of Islamic financing structures. Other focus areas of his include M&A, projects, as well as laws on renewable energies and climate change. He studied law and Middle Eastern Studies at the universities of Freiburg, Damascus, Cairo (AUC), London (SOAS) and Berlin. In spring 2008, he was a visiting fellow at the Harvard Islamic Legal Studies Program, where his research focused on Islamic finance and CSR. He has published widely on Islamic finance, Middle Eastern business and constitutional law, and on energy policy and climate change.
