(Professor, Kazakh-British Technical University, Almaty, Kazakhstan) Ken Charman is a renowned expert on the transition process in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, having started on assignments in Hungary in 1991 whilst completing his MBA at London Business School, and then living and working as a university lecturer (now professor) and professional economist in Kazakhstan, other Central Asian Republics, Eastern Europe and the Middle East since 1993. Ken graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Agricultural Economics from Nottingham University (1980-83), an MBA from London Business School (1989-91), and a PhD in Economics from London Business School (1994-98), with his thesis topic on international joint ventures in Kazakhstan, and his research and data collection carried out in the Republic of Kazakhstan during the early years of transition. He has specialized in transition economics since the early 1990s, and has published work on the economics of transition, and on Eastern Europe and Central Asia in addition to the numerous analytical reports and articles carried out for international donors in the course of his assignments.
