Abstract

Aim: The research aimed to identify the need to revive the Qatari Fereej in line with the holistic view of sustainability and sustainable growth.Research Background: Due to the rapid transformation of the old urban fabric of the 20th century, the country has lost its aesthetic values, social cohesion, aspect of Islamic design principles and urban planning to attain those of socially cohesive urban planning neighborhoods.Research Methodology: Mixed research approach was selected for the investigation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted from the Urban planners (Municipal Spatial Development Plans Team), architect, and community people [the older generation, the young generation, and the current generation]. Additionally, a visual analysis of three different case studies of neighborhoods was carried out. The analysis was based on three different municipalities i.e. New Salatah (Old traditional neighborhood in Doha Municipality - 1), West Bay Lagoon (a compound in Doha municipality - 2), and Rwadat Al Hamama Neighborhood (New neighborhood in Al-Dayeen Municipality - 3).Results and Findings: The current urban infrastructure of Doha indicates several challenges associated with the urban planning of the country mainly about social cohesion. The comparative analysis of the three municipalities i.e. New Salatah, Rwadat Al Hamamah, and West Bay Lagoon has indicated that Rwadat Al Hamama is behind the other municipalities in terms of social harmony, the architectural and urban language of buildings, urban fabric, transportation infrastructure, pedestrian space quality of public space as well as safety and security. Conclusion: A multi-dimensional solution is offered for enhancing social cohesion by introducing additional Fereej characteristics into the modern urban architecture of the image abilities. This will allow integrating space and perceptions for reaping the benefits of relational, subjective and socially connected spaces for the people.Self-reflection:The study was quite helpful in enhancing the researchers' self-understanding and learning about the importance of connectivity among different neighbourhoods. A mixed research approach was helpful for me to identify how the use of analytical and communication approaches can be made to attain the goals of the investigation. The use of multiple theories, case studies and the use of both qualitative and quantitative data helped me in polishing my personal and professional skills.
