Abstract
| This thesis investigates the impact of inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in promoting development and diversification in the economy with a special focus on the non-hydrocarbon sector in Qatar from 1990-2011. The thesis addresses the question of whether or not there is a positive role for FDI to contribute toward the economic development and diversification goals of the non-hydrocarbon sector in Qatar. A panel analysis (longitudinal approach) has been conducted to explore the correlation between inward FDI and Real GDP (hydrocarbon GDP and non- hydrocarbon GDP breakdown), as well as exports, government's revenues and expenditures. The thesis explores the implications of the government's economic policies toward economic development and diversification in attracting the desired types of FDI. The thesis illustrates that the impact and contribution of inward FDI in the hydrocarbon sector is reflected significantly in Qatar's total exports. Therefore, the sources of government revenue are mainly influenced by proceeds coming from hydrocarbon exports. These proceeds finance the country's economic development and diversification plans and projects. The thesis showed that while the contribution of the non-hydrocarbon sector in Qatar's total exports is modest; in fact, its contribution toward Real GDP is higher than the contribution made by hydrocarbon GDP. In addition, it was observed that most of the non-hydrocarbon production and services are geared toward serving local demand through import substitution industrialization. Therefore, the thesis concluded that the government's economic policies toward economic development and diversification in Qatar's economy are adequate and effective. |
