Abstract

International development is mentioned as the core focus area, shaping the aim, mission and, consequently, the activities of international NGOs across the South. It is often perceived to be more focused on economic growth, eradication of poverty and the environmental and health sectors. Development, as a multidimensional discipline, comprises various domains, including education, which is pivotal for a real development of any country. Development is about unlocking the human potential by teaching, training and, in so doing, educating people. The present thesis focuses on international development as a concept in western perspectives, exploring its connections within the Islamic humanitarian and NGO charities working in sub- Saharan African.

The thesis clarifies some interpretations regarding the concept of international development, especially in an African context, by exploring its various theories, such as modernization, dependence and world system theories, as well as their impact on African development paths. The thesis studies the relationship between development and education, particularly with respect to international community commitments to assist African countries' development in education. Educational Islamic NGOs, humanitarian and charity organizations efforts and contributions to Africa's education are cited as examples, with a special focus on Islamic NGOs from Qatar, which is one of the main donors that finance international development - with more than 5 billion donations between 2010 and 2011.
