Abstract

West Bay Central Business District is one of the main areas in Qatar. Since it is one of the main areas, it should be one of the most vibrant, lively places that is used by all people. This research looks deeper into West Bay and therefore has encountered a number of negativities in terms of its design and its liveability, which makes it an unpleasant place for users/residents to be in. Although West Bay is the only place in Qatar that includes all such dynamic, tall towers, but this is not enough for the place to have a successful public realm as the public realm is currently very weak and needs major regeneration to revive the place. Actually, West Bay is currently not a place where you would intentionally want to visit or be in. There are basically many challenges in terms of pedestrian accessibility, safety, and enjoyment. The place is not well-designed for people, and it has a harsh environment. The congested traffic and excessive use of cars at West Bay are also another problem that most people complain about. This study identifies in detail all the problems and issues that West Bay is facing, and then set out objectives on how West Bay Central Business District should develop. A full analysis was developed on West Bay with SWOT and gaps analysis were conducted. Some fieldwork took place in order to investigate the movement of the users around the area. But in order to have solid feedback and to set out the missing requirements of West Bay, a questionnaire was also developed and distributed to users to get their opinion. Interviews were also held with designers, and the municipality in order to understand the vision and the future development plans of West Bay and for the proposed designs/ recommendations to be in line with what is already planned. The end result of the study produced a visionary urban design development on the regeneration of West Bay Central Business District with images and solutions showing how the problems of West Bay can be solved through this Urban Regeneration exercise.
