In this lecture, Dr. Sherman Jackson, named as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, will explore the concept of ‘The Islamic Secular’ as a pathway to reform. Jackson uses the term to represent areas of human endeavor that lie within the scope and attention of Islam but whose substantive content is not determined by Sharia. He argues that Muslims must eliminate the notion that they can only preserve Islam by simply preserving the integrity of Sharia, and instead consider engaging the Islamic Secular to be as religiously valuable as engaging and implementing Sharia.
