Abstract
After going over the basic principles and current status of waqf, the paper will explore the ways in which it can be integrated with the Islamic financial sector in order to identify the synergies that can benefit and develop both sectors. The interaction of the waqf sector and Islamic finance can be viewed in two broad ways. The first is to examine the potentials of using Islamic financial sector as an input to promote and develop the waqf institutions. This can be done providing financing to develop waqf assets either in the form of direct financing or raising funds from the Islamic capital market. Another service that the financial sector can provide the waqf sector to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness is to provide professional management services akin to trust management services in the conventional sector. The second way in which the two sectors can be integrated is to use the concept of waqf as input to develop Islamic financial products. Among others, waqf can be used to develop models of microfinance, takaful and guarantees, particularly to expand financial inclusion.
