Abstract

One of the problems facing Middle Eastern banks is that an Arab marketplace similar to that of the US or Europe does not exist. An analysis of the performance of Islamic banks in Bahrain allows for an assessment of the benefits gained by moving to Western markets. This thesis investigates the relationship between Islamic economic theory and practice, Euromarkets in the context of riba-oriented finance, and opportunities for Islamic banks thereof. Islamic financial activity in London and Geneva is compared to that of Bahrain. The role of the Islamic Development Bank in promoting Islamic finance is also discussed, as well as the prospects for Islamic international banking.
