Abstract

Here is a case study of Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad focusing on its operation for the first eight years of its existence. This bank was founded in 1983 as the first full Islamic bank in Southeast Asia. The study is important for Bank Islam and any companies considering to establish themselves in the region. An important feature of the research is that it assesses the success of the Islamic bank's system in a society embedded with interest. Another significant part of this study is a survey of Malaysian Muslim bank depositors in an attempt to gain an understanding of why Bank Islam only holds 2% of the total commercial bank deposits while 53% of the population is Muslim.
