This study aims to test the theory and practice of Islamic banking under Shari'a law and also examine the controversy surrounding this subject. The theoretical presentation is made in the first three chapters: Chapter 1 deals with the prohibition of interest under Islamic law; Chapter 2 is about finance and investments in the private sector; Chapter 3 tells about the Islamic banking system from a Muslim scholar''s point of view. The practical presentation follows in the remaining chapters: Chapter 4 talks about the role of Islamic banks in international financial markets; Chapter 5 presents a case study of the Dubai Islamic Bank, which the author claims as the first established Islamic bank in the world and therefore, the best; Chapter 6 contains a case study of Islamic banking in Sudan and goes on to examine why Islamisation of the banking system in Sudan was unsuccessful; Chapter 7 deals with the Islamic Bank International in Denmark, the only Islamic bank outside the Islamic worl
