Abstract

The thesis explores the basis of Islamic economic thought: the Qur'an and the Sunna. The implications for the elimination of poverty, full-employment, and economic growth are examined within the context of Islam as providing the guidance mechanism readily applicable to a prosperous society and stable political economy. This is a four-part study beginning with an examination of economic and social problems, followed by an overview of Islamic social and political philosophy, then a definition of Islamic economic doctrines, and finally a discussion of Islamic economic policies and their implications. Overall, the thesis looks at the fundamental principles of Islam, the means of livelihood and the work ethic in Islamic society, the lawful and unlawful aspects of economic activity, the issue of riba, and riba-free banking, public ownership and its related fiscal principles. Policy discussions follow on the topics of poverty and basic needs, employment and economic growth. Underlying t
