Abstract

This thesis focuses on the ethical and methodological framework of Islamic economics, particularly with reference to Syed Nawab Haider Naqvi, while considering to a lesser extent the prohibition of riba . In Islam, Economics and Society (1994), Naqvi offers an axiomatic approach to generating an Islamic economic theory from a fundamental level. Chapter one of this thesis evaluates Naqvi's arguments for a distinctly Islamic economic system. Chapter two examines Naqvi's theoretical framework and the Islamic economic system which derives from it. It also compares Naqvi's approach with that of M. Umer Chapra, another advocate for developing an ethical framework for the foundation of an Islamic economic theory. Chapter three examines the debate surrounding the definition and importance of riba in Islamic economics. More systematic approaches for interpreting the Qur'an (the source of Naqvi's economic principles) are recommended. _x000D_
