The initial chapter of this work deals with history, function, and development of aswaq in a typically Islamic city. The next chapter moves on to early trade routes in the Arabian Peninsula and their impact on the region, specifically focusing on paths through the Hejaz region and their impact on the city of Jeddah and its aswaq. Chapter three introduces commercial activities in a religious and social context in Islamic societies, and it describes the shari`a codes and basic principles governing such an economy. In addition, the writing presents that shaping of commercial activity by politics and society. The organization of suq is described in the following chapter in order to provide a fuller picture of aswaq in Jeddah. In elaborating on suq in city trade and craftsmanship, the chapter examines the effects of Jeddah's transformation on Saudi society.
