Abstract

This study focuses the teachings the Prophet pertaining to economic policy, particularly regarding the alleviation of poverty. The thesis begins by analyzing terms found in the Qur'an, including faqir, miskin, da'if, mustad'if and ibn al-sabil. The Prophet's teachings and their application towards alleviating poverty are placed within historical economic context, as well as the economic effects of the Prophet's raids. Later chapters discuss economic issues such as khums, fay' and the prohibition of riba, as well as the implementation of taxation methods such as zaka and jizyah. Also included are maps of Arabia and Medina to better highlight the Prophet's activity.
