This volume titled Access to Finance and Human Development – Essays on Zakah, Awqaf and Microfinance aims to bring together papers on these themes. The volume consists of selected papers from the 8th International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance held in Doha from 19 to 21 December 2011 and from the 9th International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance held in Istanbul from 9 to 11 September 2013. The papers are presented here in their original form as presented at the conferences, with changes limited to copyediting and correcting typographical errors. The conferences were organized by the Center for Islamic Economics and Finance, Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), Hamad bin Khalifa University; Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), Islamic Development Bank (IDB); International Association for Islamic Economics and Finance (IAIE); and Statistical, Economic, and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC). In recent years there has been significant progress in the development of modalities and practices of Islamic microfinance services. The papers included in this volume only partially cover those theories and practices.
