The article is an account of the economic system under the leadership of the Sokoto caliphate, a caliphate established in the beginning of the nineteenth century AD. The author provides some historical background regarding Shaykh Uthman b. Foduye and his supporters, called the Jihadists. The Shaykh undertook a famous migration from Degel to Gudu after thirty years of preaching in Hausaland--the caliphate came into being a short time thereafter. The author presents a list of major players in the Jihadist camp. In his discussion of the economic policy of the Sokoto, the author presents the importance of labor in al-Qur'an and in various Ahadith. The role of trade and the practices in governing the market are discussed. Marketing, local and international, is described. Within the system of government, agricultural policy (particularly the plantation) and industrial leadership are mentioned. Public revenue and public expenditure are addressed.
