Abstract

Al-Qur'an and the sunna speak out against economic exploitation. One example of the disapproval of exploitation is the fifth of war spoils that must be given up. In al-Qur'an, spending in God's way is repeatedly mentioned. Short weights and measures are condemned in the holy text. Employees should in Islam be paid enough to meet basic needs. Islam limited the possible means of enslavement to one and the freeing of slaves is promoted in the religion. Slaves, when held, should be treated as brothers. Caliphs gave fiefs only as a means of making Islam stronger and making agricultural improvements. Zaka collected from provinces was sent to the capital for distribution. The social security system of Islam even covered non-Muslims living under Muslim rule. Wealth in the Islamic economy should be made to flow through the economy rather than to stay in few hands. The wealthy should take care of the poor. Under Capitalist systems, the zaka has been left out of the pillars of Islam.
