Senior Adviser, Financial Sector Global Partnership Group, The World Bank; Washington, D.C. Wafik Grais is senior adviser in the Financial Sector Group at the World Bank. He heads the Bank’s Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) and leads the Bank's work on Islamic finance. Prior to his current assignment, he was director for private sector and finance in the Middle East and North Africa group at the World Bank. From 1984 to 1991, he managed the IBRD economic policy dialogue and lending activities with the former Yugoslavia, and with the countries of North Africa. Between 1992 and 1997, he established and headed the World Bank country operations division for Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia and Armenia. In 1997 and 1998, Wafik Grais was a member of the Cairo-based international team charged of setting up the Bank for Cooperation and Development in the Middle East and North Africa. He was engaged in the formulation of the operational and financial policies of the bank, project identification, and organizational design. Wafik Grais holds a PhD in economics, a Licence ès science économique, and a Licence ès science politique from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. His publications deal with macroeconomic, energy and financial sector policy issues
